Gaining experience and working with technique is so, so important and the trial and error part of this helps us improve our level of confidence, but it isn’t the whole picture, and confidence is more elusive in some than others!
It is a process and it is a journey. Part of that journey is the performance piece- and this should actually start before we think we’re ready or feel like we’re “worthy”! Therefore, it’s necessary to sort of put the cart before the horse and get out there and share your gift early on in your learning- because performing is an integral part of the singing journey and just like you need to solidify your technique, you need to build up your performance “muscles”!
If you can accompany yourself with an instrument or have a friend that can back you up, then look around your area for an open mic and sign up! If you don’t have a way to back yourself up, these days it’s easier than ever to practice performing- karaoke!
Karaoke provides a fun, laid back way to try out a song or two and get some experience in front of an audience. The best thing is that it’s not meant to be a talent show- it’s just for fun, so you can do your thing without the pressure of feeling like it needs to be perfect! You can even practice with a background track in the comfort of your own home as there are THOUSANDS of karaoke tracks on YouTube- so try it out!
If you are dealing with stage fright, then repeat after me… The best antidote for stage fright is practice, practice, practice! Work out any issues and address them head on- apply your techniques from your toolbox, seek help where needed, fix what needs to be fixed -or change the key, pick a different song..whatever you need to do to set yourself up for a WIN! Then perform- and be comfortable in the knowledge that you have worked out your songs and re-worked the challenging parts. That you nailed it in your living room and you know that you’ve got this. Along with that knowing, understand that perfection is a myth - and that is okay! Just put your best foot forward and share your gift- from your heart! That’s what the audience will appreciate and react to. If something doesn’t come off just right, move on with grace and then that’s what you work on when you’re back to the drawing board. Make sure you own and feel good about all the things that went right and carry that forward into your next performance!
This is how you build your confidence. And confidence makes a good performance great. In the “cake” of your performance, your technique is the ingredients and your confidence is the icing- and that’s the part that makes the audience go “YUM!”
Naturally you have to have both. Your hard work, learning and mastering your technique will get you where you need to be vocally, and bringing it all together with assuredness and positivity will help you really connect with your audience. Confidence is King!!
